Clever Cleaning Hacks Using Biome Favourites

At Biome, we love to rethink how we can do more with less!  Like using one cleaning product for multiple purposes. Some of the best hacks we've seen come from our team, our customers, and the broader community. Whether you're into DIY, zero waste, or just love stretching a product to its full potential, these cleaning ideas go way beyond the label.

Biome Laundry Liquid Bar ➛ Range Hood Vent Cover Cleaner

If you're like us, you don't often don't look up under the range hood where the steam and oils are extracted while cooking on the stove top.  But, it's a good maintenance job to do once a year. One of our team members used the Biome Laundry Liquid Concentrate Bar to cut through the stubborn grease on their exhaust fan cover. The result? An incredible transformation. It's gentle but powerful—ideal for grime without the toxic fumes.

How to clean your range hood vent cover:

  1. Remove the cover and place into a bath tub.
  2. Cover with boiling water and 300-400ml of the made up Biome Laundry Liquid.
  3. Leave it to soak for an hour or so.
  4. G,ive the screen a quick scrub with a cleaning brush and the oil and grease just slip off.
  5. Rinse and allow to dry before reinstalling.

All we can say, is imagine how awesome will our Laundry Liquid be at keeping your clothes clean too—with no synthetic surfactants, additives or palm oil in sight!

Kin Kin Dishwasher Powder ➛Tea Stain Eliminator

We already knew this stuff was great for sparkling clean dishes without the nasties in Finish and other commercial detergents. But here's a game-changer:

“My mother’s dishwasher broke and her tea cups had started to get stained. So she put a little of the powder in with some water and let it sit for a bit—the stains came right off!” – Lauren

One of our team also used it to clean the inside of their Fressko reusable cup.  It worked a treat!

See it in action on Instagram: Watch video here

How to clean tea stains off tea cups:

  1. Add a small amount of Kin Kin Natural Dishwasher Powder to your cup or teapot
  2. Add hot water from kettle and swirl about.
  3. Let it sit for at least an hour or so.
  4. Wash as normal either by hand or pop into the dishwasher.

Kin Kin dishwasher powder has 120+ five star reviews on our website, and you only need to use a small amount per load (you don't fill the dispenser like other brands instruct you do). That's because it is concentrated and not bulked out with useless fillers.

Oxygen Bleach + Nail Brush ➛ Whiten Tile Grout

Cleaning discoloured white grout between floor tiles? Mix Biome's oxygen bleach with warm water and use a natural fibre nail brush to scrub. It lifts embedded dirt without bleach fumes or harsh chemicals.

How to whiten dirty tile grout:

  1. Mix – Dissolve 2 Tbsp oxygen bleach in 2 cups warm water (½ cup in 4L for large areas).
  2. Apply – Pour or spray onto grout until saturated.
  3. Sit – Leave 10–15 mins, keeping it wet if it starts to dry.
  4. Scrub – Brush grout lines with a nail brush or old toothbrush, focusing on stains.
  5. Rinse – Wipe or mop with clean water to remove residue.

Remember that Oxygen Bleach does its best work for about one hour after it has been activated by water.

We recommend a monthly Monthly Deep Clean: Dissolve ¼ cup oxygen bleach in 2L warm water, mop over tiles, let sit 10–15 mins, lightly scrub grout if needed, then rinse.

Glass Trigger Spray Bottle  ➛ Super Useful

Forget single-use plastic. Our glass trigger spray bottles are perfect for making your own homemade cleaners, garden pest sprays, animal pest sprays and more without plastic leaching:

  • Apple cider vinegar + water = natural kitchen spray
  • Citrus peel + vinegar infusion = beautiful-smelling, multi-surface cleaner

"Durable glass means my spray can get a bit hot in the barn but wont leach plastics into my spray!"

And they look good too:

“I use these to mix up an apple cider vinegar cleaner, and they're nice enough to leave on the bench!”

Redecker Copper Scourer  ➛ Not Just For Pots & Pans

This one doesn’t get enough credit.  Copper scourers are incredibly versatile. While most commonly used in the kitchen, they’re also excellent for tackling rust and grime on outdoor tools, metal, cutlery, bikes, auto parts, and even delicate machinery.

Because copper is non-abrasive and softer than steel, it cleans effectively without scratching the surface (nor rusting itself over time).  Perfect for anyone who wants effective cleaning without risking damage to their gear.

How to remove rust from garden tools:

  1. Dampen the tool with water or white vinegar. Vinegar helps soften rust.
  2. Use the copper scourer to scrub gently in circular motions.
  3. Wipe clean with a cloth and inspect. Repeat if needed.
  4. Finish by drying completely and rubbing in a light layer of oil (such as linseed or coconut) to protect the metal.

This simple method works well on secateurs, spades, trowels, and more—bringing dull old tools back to life without resorting to harsh wire brushes or synthetic cleaners.

Eucalyptus Oil ➛ Old-School Magic

Perhaps one of the most versatile little bottles you can keep in your home:

  • Remove sticky labels: rub with eucalyptus-moistened cloth
  • Hand cleaner: great for paint, grease, odours
  • Dog wash: a little in the rinse helps with fleas
  • Toilet freshener: a teaspoon in the bowl = deodorising + disinfecting
  • Chewing gum remover: soften with oil and lift away

Bicarb + Liquid Castile Soap ➛ MYO Gumption

Gumption is a common term in Australia for a mild abrasive cleaning paste used to clean surfaces like stainless steel sinks, taps, stovetops, showers, grout, and tiles without damaging the surface. The product cuts through grease, grime, and stains without harsh chemicals.  This slightly gritty paste is also known as a "cream cleanser".   But we have a recipe for you to make your own without any synthetic ingredients!

  • Not for: Delicate surfaces like marble or glass with special coatings.

How to make gumption cream cleanser

Add the ingredients to a bowl and mix well. The paste is now ready to use.

Rinse with water and dry with a clean cloth.

This recipe doesn't keep well, so mix it up when you're preparing for a big clean and use it all in one go.

That Red House Stain Remover Stick ➛ Shoe Cleaner

Yes, it's designed for laundry stains. But customers have found this That Red House Laundry Stick also effective for cleaning dirt off white sneakers.

“I use it to also clean my white shoes and they look like new.”

Just rub the bar directly on the shoes, lather, and rinse. Easy.
