How long do solar lanterns actually last, and can you leave them outside all year?
In Australia we have some extremes of weather from searing hot sunny days, to cyclones and snow! If you’re browsing Biome’s solar lighting range - from classic lanterns to playful glass pebbles and dandelions - here’s what you really need to know about how long they will last and how to care for them to prolong their life.
In a nutshell
- Biome’s solar lanterns and lights generally last 2 to 5 years with some simple care
- They’re designed for Aussie outdoor living, but last longest when protected from extreme weather such as blistering sun, heavy rain, cyclones, and flooding
- Place in direct sun and avoid pooling water for best results
- Biome stocks options in stainless steel, glass, and Tyvek®, for durability
How long do Biome’s solar lanterns and solar lights last?
Biome only chooses solar lighting designed for long life and low waste. Here’s a quick guide to the main types in our range:
LUMIZ Solar Lanterns
- Made from high-grade Tyvek® (super strong, paper-like material)
- Weather resistant, and foldable for easy storage
- Lasts 2–5 years or more with care
Lumina of London Solar Lanterns, Pebbles & Dandelions
- Lumina Solar Lanterns: Classic glass and metal, made for entertaining outdoors, built for repeat use for 2-5 years.
- Glass Pebbles: Charming solar “stones” that light up garden beds or paths. Made of durable glass and high quality solar panels. Expect 2-3+ years - they have a built-in rechargeable battery
- Dandelions: Elegant solar garden stakes with wire “petals” bring a sparkle to plant pots or flower beds. Stainless steel and weather-resistant, designed to stay outdoors, though best brought in during storms for longest life (2-5 years).
- Solar Ivy Lights: Realistic leafy string lights with built-in solar panel - perfect for wrapping around railings, fences or balconies. (Includes a plug for indoor use, and a solar panel for outdoor use if placed in sunlight).
Catch the Sun Jars
- Rustic solar mason jars with a small LED light inside
- Upcycled glass, sturdy and water resistant (not fully waterproof)
- These jars give light for up to 6 hours at a time when fully charged
- They can be left outside temporarily but not for extended periods, as they can rust over time - perfect to bring out for summer evenings and BBQs.
Can you leave solar lanterns and solar lights outside all year?
Yes, Biome’s range is built for the outdoors, even this unpredictable Australian climate. However, a little care makes a big difference. To prolong their life for many more years we recommend not leaving them outside unnecessarily.
- Rain is fine, but avoid puddles: All solar lanterns, pebbles and dandelions sold at Biome are water resistant (they handle showers and dew), but should not sit in water or be submerged.
- Storms and frost: For best results, bring them in during extreme weather. Strong wind, hail, cyclones, heavy frost and snow can damage delicate parts - especially on the dandelion stakes.
- Sun exposure: Products like LUMIZ lanterns and glass pebbles are made to resist fading, but all materials age faster under constant, harsh sun. Rotate, or give them some shade in the peak of summer for longevity.
Where to place your Biome solar lights
- Direct sunlight: Position in a spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight for a full charge
- Elevated or well-drained spots: Especially for glass pebbles, dandelion stakes, and Catch the Sun jars
- Secure placement: Wind can blow over lighter lanterns and garden stakes
To note: All solar products are recommended for use in Spring/Summer, however, they can be used during Autumn/Winter, particularly in parts of Australia where we still get plenty of sun through the colder months. However, the light may be weaker or the time they stay on for may shorten.

Quick FAQs
What should I do if my lantern isn’t charging?
Clean the solar panel and check the placement for maximum sun.

They’re water resistant and made for outdoor use, but last for longer if brought in for big storms, cyclones, or flooding.
Can I leave my lanterns and pebbles out all winter?
Yes, in light rain and cool weather, but it’s best to bring them in for hail, frost, or major storms. We also recommend that you bring them inside when you do not really need them outside. They will always last longer if kept inside.
