Why is 304 grade stainless steel best for ice cube trays?

Grade 304 stainless steel is considered the premium choice for food preparation because it offers outstanding durability and corrosion resistance.

You'll often see "18/8 stainless steel" used to describe kitchenware. This simply refers to the metal's composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Grade 304 is the internationally recognised industrial specification for this same high-quality alloy, giving you confidence in its long-term performance.

Benefits include:

  • Excellent resistance to rust and corrosion
  • Won't pit or degrade with repeated freezing
  • Non-reactive with food and liquids
  • Built to last for many years

How to use a stainless steel ice cube tray

  1. Fill to the top of the insert only (not the outer tray).  Remember that water expands as it freezes.
  2. Ensure the tray is sitting flat in the freezer.
  3. To release the frozen cubes: flip tray over and briefly run the base of the tray under cool tap water to loosen the cubes (or leave it sitting for 20 seconds).
  4. Turn back over and place on a flat surface.
  5. Hold the tray firmly with one hand while gently pulling the integrated lever.
  6. Move the lever back and forwards a few times, then lift it out altogether.

Do not use excessive force as the handle may bend. If the cubes don't release easily, simply run the base under water for a few more seconds and try again.

    Love, love, love it!

I really love this ice cube tray. It takes a little to get used to getting the cubes out though compared to more traditional ice cube trays.

Whenever our ice cube container is nearly empty, I fill it up, freeze it to then defrost it a little when done, so the cubes can be released individually.

Not just water, lemon juice, lime juice, left over stock, the possibilities are endless!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are stainless steel ice cube trays safe?

Yes. A high-quality stainless steel ice cube tray made from food-grade Grade 304 stainless steel is one of the safest materials you can use in the freezer. Unlike plastic trays, stainless steel won't leach BPA, PFAS, PFOA or other plastic-associated chemicals into your ice.

Grade 304 stainless steel is non-reactive, meaning it won't absorb or transfer flavours, odours or contaminants. It's naturally resistant to rust and corrosion, even with repeated freezing and washing, making it a durable choice that can last for many years.

If you're looking to reduce plastic in your kitchen and enjoy pure, fresh-tasting ice, a stainless steel ice cube tray is a practical and long-lasting alternative.
